24 birds processed...cost???

4-5$ per bird here. If they are small birds (broilers about 3 #) they go down to $3 per bird but you need to have minimum quantities like 25 or 50 to get that price.

Ditto what they said about not wanting to spend more money on these birds than you already have. That's why I'm braving the waters of processing in a month or two.

Hi there. The Amish about 40 minutes north of me are 1.25 a bird. This includes only the processing. They do not bag or cut up the chicken. Although, I suppose they would if you were willing to pay more. With the Amish you have to drive there to make an appointment. Drive back to drop off your chickens. And then come back the next day to pick them up. There is also a place in Marlette, MI that I have heard good things about. They charge 1.45 a bird. And again no bagging or cutting up. The place in Marlette said they would be done in one hour with my 20 meaties. So I'm going to try them out. Will be less driving in the end. I plan on just cutting up my own to keep costs lower.

These Amish are in Clare County near the Isabella County border. If you would like more info, like directions, I can get it to you. Sorry I'm not sure which direction Howard City is.

You do your own. I only have 20 meaties, so I was contemplating doing it myself. Do you do it all by yourself or do you have help. I'd probably be doing it alone since it will be right around deer season and the hubby will be preoccupied. Anyways, never butchered anything in my life, but am willing to give it a go.

It's certainly do-able alone, especially if you skin them, which takes a ton of work and time out of it. I'd start with one, see how much time it takes you, then decide if you want to do the rest.
