so we lost count at 89 too many in there moving around theres a lot more than we counted. At this point my kids scared they will crush each other as its 240 potential birds in a small space. Eggs were packed in tight enough they almost touched all the way across the bottom. not going to open the incubator for fear of drying out any pipped or half opened eggs. That would most likely result in birds that dont make it. Happy with this shipment. My last shipment of eggs only had 20 out of 300 eggs hatch. Mostly due to the inacuracy of the styrafoam type incubators. Difficulty maintaining humidity as well as accuracy. We were unsure if shipping played a role as well. This batch the birds are popping smoothly havnt seen any stuck due to dryness, or toooo wet. We know at least 2 of the babies pipped and quit. Never creating a crack. Im attributing that to weakness. ill get some pics tomorrow most likely when we get them out. Its looking like there will be few if any hatching on or after the actual "hatch" date.

Am I correct in reading that you intend to leave the first chicks that hatched in the incubator for more than 24 hours? That might cost some lives.. Of cause opening the incubator might as well, but I've read posts from people who open it every 6 hours or so, quickly remove all dry chicks, use a mister to spray all eggs to prevent drying out and then close again, apparently without ever getting shrink wraps.

Im imagining that it wont take that long. first birds was hatched at around 1:08 pm on saturday, removed the few before i went to bed after checking carefully for pipped or cracking eggs, after seeing none (stared for 15 minutes) I removed those. so all birds in there are from sometime last night and today. So i got a bit of time. I should have clarified that. Apologies.

As for misting them ill pass. Seeing as humidity levels are set to the level they are to prevent drowning and other issues like ability to breathe being affected because of too much moisture. pipping and inability to finish as well as beak being too far out after breaking that they cant pull back in to finish is an issue that I have heard is attributed to too much moisture. the eggs are not "solid" they allow moisture to pass through. Misting may cause water to directly hit the shell. Moisture can cause the birds to be too wet with fluids and weigh them down. mobility issues because of too much fluid in which case the cannot complete the break in the egg etc. I am not saying that to say that others are wrong or that i know more than them. Because i am by NO means an expert. Maybe i will see ill affects from this and in that case ill have to adjust and change how i go about things. who knows maybe ill take up misting one day.

You may not be an expert but you are absolutely correct with those statememts.
