Couple questions. Are the leghorns a good chicken to have.

I know they are supposed to be good layers. My chicks seem to be becoming more standoffish. I go in and see them often, talk to them, give them treats, but they seem to avoid me more and more. The little brown ones are the worst. Otherwise all is well, they are growing, they have doubled in size.

Leghorns are amazingly good layers, but tend to be very flighty and more agressive than heavier breeds.

I think it has to do with the hormones that come with laying so many eggs, because even my friendliest hens will pick fights when they are laying lots of eggs.

cosmomcnugget: white bulbs can stress the chicks out and cause picking and fighting. So red or even blue bulbs are more widely used to raise chicks.
