We have a 250w as well. 90-95F is just too hot for my chicks. The last batch hated it too. I learned to go by their behaviour as well. I have 2 week olds and a couple of 6 day olds, and the lamp is raised up on a stand so the temp is about 80F and they are in and out of the heat. I don't want it too cool in there tho cause of the little ones.
