At the pre wedding family meal that myself and my mother cooked for yesterday, I cooked 5 cornish x that DH and I processed out of our meat birds this spring. We fed 27 or so people (best I could count), had lots of questions on where the chicken came from, how they were cooked, lots and lots of comments on how good they tasted. When several people were told they were home grown free range organic birds they were surprised that you could raise a bird that was so good to eat. They were so tasty and tender. So yeah for the meaties !
How much food did I end up having left out of the meal ?
- 10 pounds of potatoes for potato salad, half a bowel left
- Gallon of corn, two big spoon fulls left
- Gallon of green beans, 4 spoon fulls
- Gallon of baked beans, about a quart
- 1 pond seasoned pinto bens, nothing
- 4 pounds of cole slaw, about 1 pound left
- Two gallon bowel of cornbread salad, nothing
- 4 dozens rolls, 1 dozen left
- 1 Large pan of cornbread, very little
- 2 large condiment trays, 1/2 tray left
- 1 very large double layer yummy marble cake with butter cream frosting, 2 tiny slices (thank you mom)
- 20 pounds of slow roasted, seasoned brisket, nothing left
- 5 cornish x chickens, nothing left
Was it worth the raising of meat birds, all their feed and poop, absolutley yes. Can't wait to get to cook the rest of those meaties !

Darn, I missed it. I find that if people like the meat, more so than other foods, they just keep eating it even if they are full.

I'm going to a wedding I a few weeks and I was thinking of giving one of my CX as a gift. :D frozen of course. Maybe I'll toss in a few eggs too

Good for you! You both must have been pleased about the results. What a great idea to host the big family meal. Now you have me planning a big family bash!

I'll be using some of mine for the family reunion BBQ in June...I'll be anxious to see if anyone even notices the difference in my free range, home grown birds vs. store bought. My family aren't a very discerning crowd when it comes to food...they just eat it.

Last Christmas I served a couple my meaties instead of turkey, the in-laws (who only know store bought bird) loved it, ( count 23 people) and my wife served a lot of her home grown veggies... was a big hit..my family, we do home grown ham from one of brothers, I served a couple of my meaties, Mom made the homemade bread, one of my sisters baked the pies, was EXCELLANT!!!!!!

Sounds like a fantastic bash! One little thing though, "- 10 pounds of potatoes for potato salad, half a bowel left" you might want to change that to BOWL. LMAO, "bowel" is er, well I'd really hate to see a bowel full of potato salad, or cornbread for that matter. ;) Seriously though, congratulations on the success of your birds and cooking!

it sounds wonderful. i am so impressed with you people that raise meat birds. i have hounded beekissed with questions. this is my first year with a garden and with chickens. we're having greenbeans out of my garden today & a red onion is sliced up to go on the hamburgers. i hoped to have a tomato, but it hasn't ripenend enough. i'm going to have tons of tomatoes. i can't wait. it would be so fabulous to cook my own chicken.

i think i'm turning my hubby around so he is considering the whole 'meat bird' idea. he wants to take them to be processed. i want to do it ourselves. i don't want to spend the money & i don't want my birds to suffer the trauma before death.

hurray for you and all the others who raise & process their own birds. hats off to you.

Doesn't it feel wonderful to eat something you actually grew yourself? I think it tastes better than any gourmet meal! Every year now when my gardens come on I feel so very rich, so decadent. Back in the old days it weren't no thang to eat entirely out of the garden and from your flocks and herds, but few people do that now, and more are raising things to sell to those who cannot raise their own instead of just for their family.

To know that others are paying a premium for fresh eggs, meat chickens and organically grown veggies and fruits...well that makes one take a fresh look at the same old thing. What we used to just think of as normal every day living has become the new craze. It was usually just the poor country folk who had to grow their own foods to supplement their grocery needs. Now it has become food that only the more well off folks can afford...who knew?
Who ever thought I would live long enough to know that people pay $27 for one chicken at a farmer's market???

My grandma would be laughing for days over that one...and would promptly go out and count just how much money was walking around her yard.
