27 weeks and no eggs from Black Astralorp....

I love the gradient of color in your eggs!

I agree with the previous poster that your middle egg looks a lot like my BA's egg (which is also a bit pointy).

3/4 of my hens laid their first egg or two outside the nest box...on the floor of the run or under the roost area. After a few tries, they got it right. It
It was fun watching her today! Up and down for a good 3 hours... She'd come out of the box and eat some oatmeal then run back up! She was very vocal today tooo the other girls seemed scared lol

What exactly does the "squat" look like? I have a RIR that is nearing 25 weeks old and I haven't seen anything noticeable from her yet. Also have 4 Buff Orps that are 3 weeks younger and they haven't done anything either.

Youll know it when it happens! Lol they get real low and kinda spread their wings and then lift their tail feathers!

Mine didn't start squatting until 25-27 weeks...then started laying about 1-1 1/2 weeks after that. Easy way to tell is to walk up behind one of them and reach down like you plan to pet their back. They'll either run away...thinking you are a lunatic...or they will be compelled to squat down like you are a rooster trying to mate them.

They suddenly freeze in place (making it very easy to catch them if you need to), lower their body a bit and spread their wings out partway (not full extension). Sometimes they just do that for a second, and sometimes they will freeze and not move for a few minutes..even if I prod them with the toe of my shoe. (Crazy chickens!). It's quite a sight to behold.

My poor husband, who is supportive of my chickens but a bit freaked out by them, had to try and get them to go back into the run by himself the other day and he called me at work saying, "every time I shoo them toward the run, they freeze, look at me funny and lift their wings". I told him that meant they wanted him to be their rooster. I don't think he was amused!

Our sex-link stomps her feet when we are "mating" her lol

I'm playing the waiting game too! I have 3 RIR who are 26 weeks old this Friday - and no squatting or eggs yet. Do all hens squat though? I had two Colombian Wyandottes in my flock that squatted, but my two Speckled Sussex never did. My RIR girls are nice and big with pretty deep red combs. I'm looking in the nestbox every day. I know with the shorter days not to expect many eggs - I've had nothing from my lone Sussex since early October. I guess I have to keep waiting for the freeloaders...

I have a astralorp she is a great layer! i have 2 actually. one is a brooder they are supposed to make good moms. and one is not!! well we did not think one of ours was layin then we could not find her one day. we looked everywhere we were so worried. but then i saw a black thing i thought it was a peice of plastic in the middle of a bush but i checked anyway!! and there she was my girl. once she got up we saw there was like12 eggs in the nest. so you might want to look around you might find a nest if your chickens are range free. Good Luck!! and mine started laying at about 4 or 5 months old. well HAVE FUN WITH YOUR ASTALORP!!!!!

We love her very much! She hasn't given us an egg for 2 days! I think after her second one her body was like "WHOA... NOT READY YET" lol so we'll see if we get one today... It might be a week till we get another! Our astralorp is funny if you crouch down and put your arm out she'll jump on your arm and kinda snuggle up to your chest. Once she gets situated we stand up and walk with her on our arm! It's like having a parrot lol!
