27 weeks and still no eggs!

I can't believe what I just did. My 8 year old daughter and I just went out and inspected vents. Some are moist and some aren't.

The funniest part was my daughters commentary. "I will find the vent. I'm an expert at finding vents." "Is that one moist enough?" "I'm looking for moist vents." She was cracking me up.

Maybe some day soon we will have some eggs.

Take care,

Tami

My hens are at 24 weeks - two white leghorns and one mixed breed/Buff Orpinton - still no eggs. The roosters mate with them and they don't seem to mind terribly. The combs of the leghorns are still pretty pale.

The hens who don't want to "squat" for the roosters are over a year old maybe two that a friend asked me to winter over for her. They lay great big brown eggs (2.7 oz is the record), but they squawk away when the roosters try to get them. I notice some feathers missing on their heads too. Are they just getting too old to enjoy the sex?! Or are two roosters in a 10'x10' pen too much for them?

Ok, I don't feel so bad. I thought I was one of the few with no eggs yet. My girls are only 22 wks now so I will forgive them.
I'm not really sure about signs so reading this post has helped me a bit. I did notice that within the last couple weeks my Silver Laced girls have nice red waddles now. The others are behind. Is that something to look out for? Anything else? Does putting a golf ball in there help? I thought I read that somewhere?
Also, we just put a light in the coop to help with the hours of light. It comes on at 3 a.m. and goes off by 9 a.m. when we figured the sun was up enough for them to get real daylight, but should we keep it on most of the day too ?
