2nd floors and shelves in coops

Seems like lots of coop designs have old shelves or smaller second floors built inside coops. More than just floor, roost, and nesting box, in other words. Am I right in figuring that these extra spaces for the girls to live inside also would count as part of square footage-per-bird calculations?
