Hello I am a new chicken owner going through my first winter with my hens. Unfortunately on Saturday I noticed my Aseel hen (Dot) stretching her neck and gasping, I immediately took her inside and isolated, since then I haven't noticed any of my other hens doing the same unfortunately there's not a vet in my area that will see chickens and so I'm stuck to treat by myself for the past 3 days I've been having my chicken on cephalexin just in case it's an upper respiratory infection but I haven't noticed any sneezing coughing no discharge from the mouth or nose or from the eyes but periodically she'll shake her head and her body so my next thought is gapeworm which I started ivermectin last night and symptoms have not improved. I'm so sad and at a loss here I just want her to feel better. I just want to know how much longer I should give her before I decide to cull. It really breaks my heart to think about as I'm crying as I'm writing this post. I also have been giving electrolytes and probiotics in her water and egg yolk she's not eating or drinking on her own. Thank you for any kind replys.

Hello! Welcome to BYC! So sorry you have a sick bird. You might want to post her symptoms in the Emergencies/Diseases/Injuries & Cure thread. Someone with the knowledge will chime in. I hope she gets well soon!

Gapeworm is a rarer type of worm, but more often chickens can gasp and stretch their necks due to a respiratory disease, either from a virus or bacteria. Have you recently added her or another bird to your flock? Does she have any swelling around either eye, or any bubbles or foam, sneezing or cough? Is she able to drink some fluids or eat a little watery chicken feed?

No unfortunately no new birds, no swelling or any other symptoms just the gasping and neck stretching
