This is my first experience with Marek's and I found some interesting info about the homeopathic remedy Hypericum on this forum. I have been using it for two days on a 4 month old pullet who has been sick for about a week. She started showing signs of improvement right away. I don't know if she will pull through, but at least she seems to be feeling better.

I am going through the same thing and have stopped the deaths at this point. I am using over the counter vitamin b12 tabs I crush them into yogurt one tablet, I also am giving poly vi sol and tetracyclean 3 have recovered at this point, The vitamin B has been the best. I stopped feeding grower and used yogurt and scrambled eggs only for 5 days.

I tried the yogurt and scrambled eggs, but she wouldnt eat it. She is really liking the grower and pellet so i have that in there. Maybe I will try again. She still cant stand and is puffy, with a wing out, eyes half closed most of the time, definately worse than yesterday am. But she is still eating and drinking on her own. Her condition is still the same as this am. Guess thats a bonus!

Chicken is no better today. Physically no worse. Havent seen her eat or drink, but her crop is full. Should i syringe the water with the sulmet to her just in case?

I would trust the bird to drink. If the poo is watery then maybe this just means that it is flushing with water. Is the poo discolored? this can help you determine what you've got.

If you have many birds then you should maintain quarantine until you determine what you have got.

Find out where to take the bird to get it tested if it dies and then go there within 24 hrs of losing a bird and they will tell you what you have. The State Dept of Agriculture or probably the State Vet can help you. I cant bring myself to cull a bird but don't waste a chance to find out if a bird dies.

Once you know what you have you can rule out unnecessary treatments. Antibiotics can be hard on the liver kidneys and other organs if the bird has a viral infection. If the bird is not showing signs of secondary infection then i wouldnt overdo the medicine.

oh and peppers and onions are ok. birds like vegetables.

good luck hope you dont have as hard a time is i am.

Thanks Sterling. I had one die last week. Now this one. They exhibit no symptoms, then it just hits. She is seperated and in the house w/ a heater toward her but at a distance. Im treating the flock with sulmet right now, and thats what she is getting. She had been eating and drinking fine til this morning. Just slowly not being able to walk, stand, loss of balance. I tried feeding her egg this am, she is not eating or drinking and will barely open her eyes. Her poo has gone from green and white and watery, to a light brown and watery diarrhea, some foam. Im sure she isnt going to make it now. Does anyone know what the change in poo means, it could be that she had just been eating pellet and starter so thats all the poo is made of, but not sure. Also, does anyone know a humane way to put a bird down?

unless it is suffering very much, it will like you try to help it. would you mind looking at the charts and writing down the symptoms again? if necessary, call your vet and they'll give you the technique for trash bag and tailpipe.

i have ruffled feathers, decreased feed consumption, breathing (REGULAR), Loss of balance, Lethargic, distended crop. make sure you check the "poo page" before noting "diarrhea or green." probably has it but make sure. What was the age of the chickens again? and how long have you had them. need a quick history.

the illness doesn't require sulfa drugs don't use it. if it stops eating, you could always pump some pedialyte &/or baby food down its throat. make sure you put syringe far down enough so you get it down the esophagus rather than the wind pipe.

i sure wish Ole Miss wouldn't have taken down their diagnosis database. i'm going to start working on my own database and maybe someone could help me post is somewhere for others. i have spread sheets now but don't know how to post them. has anyone here developed something like this? maybe it exists.

if no symptoms and then they just die you might want to look at fowl cholera. esp if other birds are dying. how many dead so far? how old? and in what amt of time have they been dying?

Long story short, I had two hens with the same symptoms as yours, and a hen with no symptoms. My hens are 2 years old. I took them to the vet, and she did not know what was wrong. I treated for mites and dewormed them. The hen with no symptoms died suddenly one day. One of my other hens got really bad, and had to be put down. The necropsy on the hen with no symptoms showed coccidia. I am treating my last sick hen, and she is much better. A sulfa drug is what helped her. Just be sure to use the correct dosage. I had "treated" with corrid, but I used the wrong dose (too little). Good luck !!
