2wk old chicks.... I have three that "cheep" and one that "trills". *updated pics at 5wks*

I learned it from my uncle , he raised tons of chickens. WhenI was younger , I spend more time with baby chickies, I learn something new about them , that was years ago. today have 9 older chickens and hoping to hatch some soon. I have an ameuracana , that I bought from someone else when they were about 5 weeks old, My daughter pick one she likes, and I told her I was afraid he will be a rooster (Looking at his eyes) sure enough I was right ! I had to find a home for him. one rooster is enough for me !! maybe I am a phychic!

I don't see anything that looks "roo-ish" in the photos... but keep an eye out for reddish feathers coming in on the shoulder and chest.

I have three 8-week-old araucana chicks right now - two males and a female. I sleep to "trills" all night long, but am pretty sure the female also makes this noise. As long as they keep that up and don't start welcoming the morning sun in the typical manner they can stay inside...

How old are these chicks, and what possible breeds? They look pretty young. I could tell the araucana boys because their combs started to redden and grow around 4 weeks, but I'm guessing that is only specific to these particular chicks.

Sounds like you'd make a killing as a chicken sexer at a hatchery... but I promise if it was that easy, it'd be a minimum wage job

its really to young to tell their gender. repost pics when they are 6 weeks old. i wouldnt sex them by the sounds they make or they way they act as my mille fleur pullet was always jumping the others like she was a he

but she is deffently a she being 2 months with no comb what so ever.

Chicks can make a pleasure trill sound. It's NOT specific to gender -- it's more like a cat purring. As for the eyes, they look exactly like the "dinosaur eyes" that all of my EEs had at that age (male and female) so I'm not convinced they mean anything either.

Thanks for the comments - I'll post some more pics in a few weeks when they're older. :)

The trill I hear is definitely not a nice little pleasure one.... it sounds like Nutmeg has been startled when she does it. The few times I've caught her in the act she's been standing really tall and sticking her neck out a bit.

They are all around 2 1/2 weeks old... hatched around 17th December (give or take a day). The yellow chick is a Light Sussex, the black and white chick is an Ancona, the one I'm questioning with the speckled brown face is a Barnevelder, and the reddish brown one with the V marking on her head is a Welsummer.

Chick sounds and trilling are hardly gender-specific. I wouldn't guess by sound until MUCH later.

I have ADULT Roos with wattles and really pretty hackle/saddle feathers who refuse to crow because they are low in the dominance hierarchy i.e. #3 and # 4. They're Brabanters so they're Euro-Boys dealing with two somewhat tough Good ol' American Barred Rock Mix Roos....

I'm still learning but I sense that early (young) stink-eye is something that little boys do.....along with standing tall, puffing up chests, and growing combs...

Your two brown chicks both look like roos to me, the white one a pullet, the black and white may be a pullet too...they are still a little young though

but keep us posted on their development.

From what you are saying it sounds like they are making "happy hen noises" which means they are happy and content. this does not mean they are hens, as my special needs roo does it as well.
