Hello all,
First time here. A bc first time raising chicks, so far so good.
I have 6 RIR 2 wk old chicks. 5 hens 1Roo. The smallest of the brood has recently started having a very distinctive chirp while wings are opened and the vent is bulging trying to poo, but only a lil comes out.
I have given fresh water,
Mineral oil for constipation,
Hand fed water,
And finally used apple cider vinegar in water.
Brooder is set to 84 degrees with cooler areas in the pen..
What can i do to help this lil girl out.

Wash its bum and apply some Vaseline to its bum.....I never give ACV or mineral oil....Fresh clean water and chick starter.....What type of bedding are you using?....If pine shavings give a bowl of grit on the side.....best wishes....

Make sure the Vaseline is only around the vent, not on it, because that will block all poo from exiting. Keep her hydrated at all times, and you may want to seprate her remporarily.

Welcome to BYC! Can you have the poop of the little one checked by a vet for coccidiosis? Can you post a picture of it's poop? I am familiar with the chirp you mention, and a few things can cause this.
  • Coccidiosis can cause the intestines to swell
  • A deformity
  • Dehydration
  • A blockage
Post a poop picture and that will give me a better idea of what's causing it. And if you can, please video it the next time as I think a video of this chirp will be very educational for people.

Ok when i get home I'll post a pic of it during and before There's no pasty butt, I've used Vaseline around the vent area. She isn't raw or swollen. It only swells when she tries to poop.
No coccidiosis, I'm feeding medicated feed 20 percent that has grit in it, and I'm using fine pine shavings, at 3 inches deep. And I've been cleaning the brooder every week.
I'll post in about 2 hrs when i get home.

Medicated feed doesn't always prevent coccidiosis, and depending on the size of the brooder, once a week cleaning might not be adequate.

Post that poop picture when you get home.
