As a coop builder all i have ever used is either a halved 2 x 3 whittled round or a real tree branch maybe 1 to 1 1/2" in diameter. No complaints from customers with or without feathers. Mimic nature is my thought. Good luck. At least you are concerned for your flocks comfort...

According to the scientific study posted on this thread, you are pretty much on the mark for the best roost (in terms of pressure on foot pads and keel bones, which is what the study investigated). I attached a PDF of it in the last post
