I currently have a 6x12 run for my 5 chickens with 1/2” hardware cloth on the whole thing. I was thinking of adding an addition run that will connect with a tunnel for them to use during the day when it’s nicer and sunny out. If I make a locking door from the main run to the additional run, would I be okay to use 2x4 welded wire on it since they’ll only be in that area during the day?

I don't see why not.

I hate welded wire fence. The welds break constantly when trying to set it up, fix it, etc. I've been stuck using it a few times, mostly for small sections, and I know anything I buy for permanent installation, will not be that welded garbage!

I think it will be fine. I plan to use mostly 2x4 welded fence when I expand my run since I have a lot of it already and needs to be used up (I use it for plant cages and trellises). I’ll probably add 1/2” HC to the bottom 3ft since the area is the corner of my property backed up to wilderness
To me the welded wire seems fine for strength, it can break but I don’t feel that easily - I hit it with my weed eater and mower all the time and it rarely breaks for me but I’m also being cautious. Aesthetically it looks considerably more presentable than the non welded stuff

Could it be operator error? ;)
I have put up 100's of feet of the 14ga 2x4WW and not had weld breakage issues.

Depends on what your predator load might be.
I used 2x4WW for my run and it's held up fine, bounced off many a hawk and even a few canids...BUT I am within sight and/or sound 95% of the time they are out there.
