Hi. So this girl is my fav and is our boss chicken. She's been going through what seemed like a long, slowed down molt (compared to last year, which was dramatic to say the least) and every once in awhile I've been thinking she looked a bit pale but then her color would improve and I'd let that go. Her behavior has been normal and her appetite and poop all normal seeming. Now this morning, when I went out to open the door and let them free (they roam my yard all day) she was not interested in eating but was drinking and drinking and drinking. She had zero interest in mealworms which is just plain weird. Something just felt funny, so I went back out after about 30 minutes and found her sitting up against the house, under a palm shrub in the shade. She didn't bother to try to disagree when I picked her up, which isn't normal. I decided to soak her in an epsom salt bath and did so for about an hour. She just chilled and didn't object - also not like her. She even dozed a bit. Afterwards, I used the blow dryer outside on the lanai and she stood looking alert and bright eyed and preened a little. But when I set her back outside in the yard, after she made a few comments to the others, she found a shady spot and just stood there looking half asleep. We have an avian vet nearby, but when I've used them in the past I've honestly gotten the feeling they are much better with parrots and exotics and that chickens seem....I don't know....not quite their thing? They were helpful with an obvious injury in another bird, but in the past when I've come to them with vague symptoms it's pretty much always ended up as a very VERY expensive exercise in futility.

She stopped laying eggs about 5 months ago after slowing down to maybe once a week for over a year. I kind of figured she was done with that and that's okay with me, as the other girls make up for it. She's not swollen at all and isn't hunched or anything like that. Mostly just sort of lethargic and off her feed.

So I'm turning to you fellow chicken folks. The poop I've seen this morning was scarce and yellow and not at all solid. Her color is pretty good and her eyes look bright, although she seems sleepier than normal. She's not interested in eating but is still drinking for me. What do you think I should look for and any suggestions at all would be great.

I love this bird. She's my pal.

I'll check back later. Thanks.

Maybe coccidiosis(there are nine strains, and only two show blood in the poop)? Early stages of Mareks? I had a hen who was badly injured by a feral puppy, and I fed her on yogurt and boiled egg, as she was refusing food. If she still refuses that then @casportpony may be able to tell you how to tube feed her.

Hopefully she gets better. Do you have a heat lamp? She should be kept warm. I know how it feels when a chicken is your buddy :hugs

Thank you!!!! I do have a heat lamp and I'm setting up a place in the house right now. I very much appreciate your reply. She's my gal and I'm grateful she is doing this near a weekend so I can pay her all my attentions!

Great, getting warmed up should help! Can you give her some electrolyte water? It will help her regain the energy she needs to function.It's always good if you can fully monitor a sick bird, I hate to say it, but they go downhill very fast.
I'll tag some people who may be able to help:
@KikisGirls
@azygous
@Eggcessive
@WVduckchick
@casportpony

Yes. I have some electrolytes in powder form around here someplace. I'm heading out to the feed store to see what they've got to help me too. Thanks!!!!!!!!

Hmmm sorry you are dealing with this. So many possibilities.

A few things that come to mind...
I usually recommend vitamins for any chick acting a little off. Also look her over for any mites, bugs, etc. and possible injuries.
Could she have eaten anything toxic or something that hurt her?

Check her crop at night, and again first thing in the morning before she eats. It should be full at night, empty in the morning. Also if you could weigh her, to get a good baseline, you’ll be able to monitor whether she is gaining or losing.

Others will be along with suggestions too, hopefully we will come across the right thing to fix her up!

She sounds like she may have a reproductive disorder that is making her feel bad. Since she hasn’t laid in 5 months, I would think it might be salpingitis or internal laying. Infection in the oviduct can lead to peritonitis. Cancer can also be common. Crop or gizzard problems sometimes accompany reproductive problems due to abdominal pressure.

Can you feel of her lower belly and compare it to your other hens, to see if it is enlarged? Check her crop as well to see if it is filling up gradually during the day, and emptying overnight by early morning. If it is still full or puffy by morning, that is abnormal. Here is a list of some laying problems and symptoms to read about:
