Yes! I will find something to put under it. Maybe towels, since we don't have much newspaper.
Small tarp maybe.
Make sure crates stay flat and stable...
...easy with my van, a passenger car might be a different story.
 
If you can run to a dollar store I'd go get puppy pads. Putting them under the crate will save your vehicles carpet. As someone who frequently has farm animals in her SUV trust me, you don't want to risk chicken poo getting in the carpet.

I think they can be stable. In the back of the car we will have some suitcases as well, which can prevent the chickens from shifting.

Bottoms of crates need to be horizontal, so chicken feet don't slide to the side.
