I ordered one rooster from Ideal with my other 9 chicks. Well, silly me, if I had ordered the rooster a different breed, then I would know which one it is

. I chose the BO because I was hoping he would be a bit kinder given their personalities.

The are 3 Buff Orpingtons and only one should be a male. Now, one DOES look different but it has me puzzled because he/she is the least developed of the bunch. I just think of Roosters as bigger thus, would develop faster.

This one is the only one not as feathered. In fact, none in the middle of the back, just nice fuzz. He also has no tail feathers and the others all do.

I am new at this, and it really doesn't matter, but is fun so what do I look for? I watch the behaviour but cannot tell. Someone in there chirps loudly when there is danger, ie., me looming from above to give them water or feed.

I will take pictures tonight . They are three weeks old tomorrow.

The one on the left is the no tail, I think rooster.

Now he is on the right.. one with no tail feathers.

Thanks, and this is the most fun I have had in ages... these cute little things!

I think the rooster can be smaller, but will catch up. You are probably right as to which it is. If that one is friendlier/braver.....it is a roo. They tend to not be as afraid. congrats on the new chicks.

Yes, it is probably the friendlier one. You won't have any trouble figuring out who it is pretty soon. His comb will start popping out. I was certain of my BO cockerel, Jimmy, by seven weeks.

Here he is at that age:

Notice he still has his cute baby fuzz, even after everyone else had lost theirs.

The one in the back of the first picture is a rooster for sure! Look at that comb already getting pink! As for feather development. I find that rooster's don't feather out as quickly as hens. This isn't a rule though.

You are right..the one in the first pic on the left is the roo. I can already see the pink in his comb too...sure sign at this age.

Thanks, guys, I have to say this forum is the best! Thanks for the picture of the other Buff Rooster. That is neat.

Pink on comb... thicker legs...I will have to remember all this, because.... I WANT MORE!
