I was watching the chicks drink and one of the RIRs got a drink and put his head up to swallow and then stayed there...and raised his head and opened his beak again as if to swallow, and again and again and again...and he made is tiny, well, squeaking noise. So i picked him up and his chest (i guess his crop) feels like a lightly inflated balloon and when I rub it, it occasionally makes the squeaking sound. The chick didn't really protest. So after a few minutes I put him down and picked up one of the other chicks and its definitely swollen and the problem chick is definitely way more lethargic.

what do i do!?!?!!

Edit:
They are on towels as bedding and eating medicated chick starter and water and thats it (besides the more than occasional poop pile) in case you wondered

I see another post where someone lost a chick with a "squishy crop".

Is there anything i can do? Try to get whatever it is out or massage it and try to pass it? ???

maybe mix a bit of chick grit in with their chick starter...
i'm sorry i can't be much help!

try some electrolytes in the water for extra energy

I have a chick that has a puffed up crop! It was suggested to me to give him a drop or two of veggie or mineral oil, and gently rub his crop in a downward motion, and see if that helps.

My little guy seems to be better now, eating, drinking even scratching in the feed. It is still kinda puffy, don't really know the reason but it must have helped him doing what I did, I like to believe that anyway.

Sure hope your chickie will be ok too!

have they been out side with the Grass yet before 3 days or able to get any thing long they can eat like grass?

try to massage it. It could be an impacted crop.

The chick seems to be ok now!

I massaged her crop for a while and then out her as the first one in the grit. IDK what worked, but everybody looks ok this AM. Its possible that they ate some fuzz off the old towels that we were using for bedding so I put newer less ratty ones in the brooder. Its also possible that she may have eaten a splinter off the side of the brooder and there isn't anything i can do about that.

Its three days later. They chick still had a "squishy crop". She is very easy to pick out for teh rest as her neck looks swollen and saggy and she frequently gasps for air. When I massage it I can see the fluid come up and out the chicks mouth. I have been massageing 2-3 times a day.

Is there anything i can do? Should I try giving the chicks(or only the one chick?) apple cider vinegar in the water or active culture yogurt or ???? Should I cull her?

Any suggestions????
