3 decade dreamer! Finally getting there!!!

:welcome Congrats on finally fulfilling your dream! What breeds did you pick out?
I ordered from a farm I was familiar with, because my sister went to their chicken & quail class in Sebastopol CA, a family farm breeding operation called Alchemist Farm.
It seems very apparent to me how much they love what they do & how much they love their chickens. They breed for temperament, egg color & beauty. They aren’t cheap, but thought I’d go for exactly what I wanted, since I’ve been waiting so long!
I ordered 10 chicks…
(4) Azure Eggers (auto-sex - females)
(2) Alchemist Blue (auto-sex - females)
(2) Moss Egger (straight-run)
(2) French Black Copper Maran (straight-run)

I’m hoping to end up with at least one female from each of the straight run chicks. If we get lucky, our basket will be quite colorful! 😊
I was quite tempted by their Double Silver Laced Barnevelder… what a beautiful chicken! 😍 Maybe next time.
Nice to meet you!

Welcome to BackYard Chickens. The Best of Luck with your Plans. And a Big Hello from Eastern Nebraska!
Oh yeah! I forgot to mention, I was living in California. I was born there & lived there for most of my life… Monterey Bay Area. We could not afford to have a place where we could have chickens, without inevitable neighbor complaints.
So we moved to Central Florida, in August! We absolutely love it here! Very down to earth people & it’s so very beautiful & peaceful.
Nice to meet you Kenneth, from Eastern Nebraska! 😃

Me too! I absolutely love hearing about the different breeds & breeders/breeding programs!!! 😁
My sister & I could talk about that for hours. I don’t know anyone as obsessed with chicken breeds as myself & my sis. 😂
I'm sure you'll find many more people on here (including myself) obsessed with chickens to chat with.

Our coop was delivered this morning!!! 😆🥰

And and closer…
If anyone here is in Florida & interested in one of Cindy’s coops (she makes larger ones too… 16ft long - ours is the 8ft coop), look up “Florida Chicken Coops” on YouTube!
She (and her husband) is a total sweetheart & does such an amazing job, at a very fair price! She was very focused on the worst Florida weather in the design of her coops (the rain & heat). She even had a customer in Sarasota, who just went through some of the worst of Hurricane Ian, and her coop stood up to it beautifully! No damage. 🙏🏻❤️🐓

Hi, I'm in Lutz and looked at her coops but am building my own. I keep going back and forth between an open coop like hers or a closed coop. Tell me your thoughts.
