3 mo old chicken died suddenly - heat stroke?

mlbein, last week my hens were holding their wings away from their bodies and panting because it was so hot here in Ohio...in the lower 90s and super humid.......

Luckily, we have a woods surrounding our house, so they were able to head for the shady spots. Their run is covered, and also has trees nearby, so at least they've got shade there too.

Crazy weather, now this week, it's been in the 70s and very nice! I wanted to mention that you can also mist your chickens....spray them with a fine mist of cool water and they actually like that.....I sometimes put some watermelon that's been in the fridge out for them, but I don't always have that available.....

Another good idea is to save those cool whip containers, and make big ice cubes with them, and put them in your flock's waterer.

Take care and so sorry you lost that hen.

LOVE BYC! I was upset this morning when one of my Americanas (Red) was dead. My first thought was heat, but now I'm unsure. She just wasn't acting right yesterday as she is usually one of the first ones outside out of the 4 week old flock of 25 (now 24)

The rest of the girls look fine and are acting normal even the crossed beaked chick is pulling through. But at least I know sometimes this just happens. I will keep an eye out as always for any fungus or mold or other sources of illness.
