Chickens do not get colds. What they get are respiratory infections that can be treated, but often come back and also render the affected bird a carrier for life.
I just got an approx 13 wk old Buff Orpington pullet from a backyard breeder last night. I'm not sure why I didn't notice while standing there...they were so proud of their chickens and had some beautiful exotic varieties. It kind of makes me sad because I don't think they know that they have an issue (and am debating calling back & telling them).
Anyway, this morning I notice that my bird is sneezing, has a runny nose, and sort of a light green colored runny poop. Otherwise, eating, drinking & acting normally. I wouldn't have a problem treating with an antibiotic if I thought it was going to get better, but there's no way I want her going near my other birds if this is something that will be chronic. She is isolated now, and planned to for the recommended 30 days, but...
I was hoping that it might get better now that she has the ability to free range and be out of her prevously congested pen, but the quote above has me concerned. This will be my children's pet and I don't want an ongoing problem.
