3 month old turkey pecking holes in his own legs?

This was from the other one and she had a great point:

I usually like iodine - but you know since you've put it that way, vetRx sure wouldn't hurt. I'd even go as far as to make a concoction of VetRx and iodine. A drop of each.

I'm really concerned about that eye. This thread has better pictures. I do believe I'd flush that eye out daily with sterile saline wash from the pharmacy - for eyes. If you can, using Chloramphenicol or Terramycin ophthalmic (eye) ointment in that eye wouldn't hurt if done 10 minutes after the cleansing. You can buy it at feedstores - ask the clerk as they have to keep it behind the counter usually. It's too easy to pocket.
I'd at least flush it daily though to keep it healthy.

Turkey pox is just 'gawd-awful' as we say here. It really is so bad. There are some outrageous pictures of it online, very heartbreaking. This boy still looks treatable if the outline (on the other post) is followed. But that mouth sore is getting awfully close to the mucus membranes of the mouth. I think I would check inside for anything 'cheesy', rather than the mouth interior looking fresh and pink.

I bet that turkey will be very glad when his four weeks is up and this is done.

Turkey pox, when you see a true strong case, is very upsetting. I'm sorry you had that experience on the other post. I will tell you - if your birds were to be put to sleep, then mine should have been. It looks horrible. I think if you've researched the pictures you've seen had bad the cases in wild turkeys can get. Treating with the iodine etc will, I hope, keep yours from getting that bad.

We'll work hard on it and try to help you out. If the thread disappears, keep my email handy just in case.

To be honest, I was horrified by my turkeys. Had they not been just happy and eating, I'd have thought the same thing about possibly euthanising them. It's just very different.

I think it's possible your other bird had it, too. Probably just in the area. My birds have it still (new birds) and each case is different. A few look just like ant bites. Some look orange, not ashey (on the red comb). But on the same bird, some are black and white and ashey. I need to photograph that comb tomorrow as it shows one of the many examples of pox. (Now how to get it off of my demon-phone-that-hates-me - that's another questions.)

I just seriously am going to vaccinate next year if I get new birds. It's just too much. Seeing it in the turkeys has put me off of it for life, how about you? /wink

Hang in there. Four weeks sounds like forever, but before you know it it's done and that's it for their life! Keep me updated, please. I'm subscribed to both posts.

Wow. So informative.

One post somewhere recommended Listerine on Q tips in the mouth for possible wet pox cases. Fortunately, I have not had to deal with this, but any comment on it, just in case?

My roo in my other flock has new lesions, and maybe one of his hens, so I am still watching this....

Sure does look like it is a lot rougher on turkeys than chickens, though.

Just to make sure - that's not a fungusy stuff - the blue? is it the brown? The picture is a little unclear.
end quote
the blue is the color of the head
most of the brown is the reminat of the fuzz that the turkey had from a chick especially on the neck
the top of the head is small dots like zits with fuzz still on them
the big patches of brown is fuzz like chick featers i dont know what to call it
the turkys head was never bald yet but was in the process of loseing the fuzz
big brown patches=fuzz
small dot= zits like things but not pox i assume a turkys head is not smooth i think these are supposed to be here they still have fuzz on them i have a good picture but it wont upload i guess it is zoomed in too close i dont know
i can try to get another in the daylight
but its hard to get him to stay still
most of the head is no as bad as it seems one spot on the eye one near the beak i will have to inspect more tomorrow they may be more smaller ones that will grow

Listerine!! that sounds brilliant!

Yeah it's hell in turkeys. Seriously I thought my turkeys were rotting on their heads. It scared me to bits. The chickens were bad, but the turkeys just look like they're rotting (dry) alive.

Funny to see it all go away in one day. You've never seen a prettier cleaner pink head. /sigh I could kick myself for not taking pictures of it, seriously. You'd never ever ever believe it.

Yeah I have it again, too, ddawn. /cry!! I am taking pictures of this boy as it's different a little this time. At least it's a chicken though.

I might try the listerine on some of his spots and see how that works!

listerine for mouth area i will look inside tomorrow
rense out eye got it will try to find thos eye meds tomorrow
will see if i can obtain penicilin not sure about that

If you get one, and need it, we can get the dosage. It'll just depend on what kind you get. TSC should have it, yeah. Vitamin E - you just slit the capsule on one end, squirt in his mouth. (I was so busy worrying that I didn't tell you how to give it - I'm sorry).

The listerine - yes just soak the q-tip and use on the outside sore.

The "wet" pox is where you look inside and see cheesy stuff. dry is scabs on the outside, no cheesy stuff on the mouth's roof.

yes, I suspected that about his eye. I couldn't tell. but it looked as if the eyeball is damaged. (I was very afraid that mine would do that, kicking at his face). Do you feel the eye is damaged? The ointment, if it's scratched, can help it not infect the socket. That could need vet care or removal. There are posts on here about eyes that are ruined or we can find information for you.

You have a busy day ahead - but then it gets easier. Just daily chores.

no do not think eye is damaged
when i first saw it the eye was almost shut the lesion w(what ever you call it) was on the bottom eye lid
i saw him scratching at it when i got the camera he must of busted the (pox ) and the eye was open
in the close up picture i have i can zoom in on it it is ok
i cannot upload it on here i think it is too big i dont know cant resize it or something
i think the eye is fine
for now anyway
