3 new predators to worry about, ugh

Sec. 10-3. Animals running at large.
(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to suffer or permit any hog, bull, ox, heifer, cow or calf, horse, stallion, mare, colt, mule, sheep, goat, jack, or other animal to roam at large either by day or night, and any animal so found shall be impounded. For purposes of this provision, the phrase "to run at large" shall mean to walk or roam without restraint or confinement either by a rider or through some rope, chain, fence, pen, or other enclosure.
(b) The chief of police is hereby authorized to sell any such animal to the highest bidder at the town hall, after three days' notice, unless the owner shall have redeemed it by paying the chief of police the currently required impoundment fee and all expenses of impounding and feeding such animal.

After reading some of this I am very glad I do not live in the town you do.

1.

he sounds like an A--hole, a dumb one

2.

he's got pits, most people when they have pits they think that they are just good at killing, and brag about it.

he doesn't sound like he's all "there" if you know what I mean, I'd be careful, if he can come onto your property, he'll ignore a "no tresspassing" sign, and the dogs can't read either.

you could sit on the porch with a gun and next time he tries to come over, put a bullet over his head, but then he'd claim you were trying to assassinate him.

for the record, we have two pit mixes, both have HORRIBLELY bad prey drives, but neither have cought, or killed any chickens

I say report it because honestly I think the OWNER is more of a threat, his dogs walked on your property with him and they may do that again or they may be SENT there when he decides to entertain some friends....did his dogs show any issues with your birds or show interest in the coop/run when they were there?

ETA: Watch your dogs as well.

Go purchase some No Tresspassing signs and post them on your property immediately.

The next time your neighbor steps foot on your property without permission, you need to kindly warn him (yes you can do it "nicely" - the first time) that he needs to remove himself and his dogs off your property because you have chickens, which are your PETS just like his dogs are HIS PETS and if your chickens get injured or killed, he will be held liable for them. You did not invite him on your property, so kindly leave the premesis. Also find if there is a leash law (most counties have them) as well as breed laws.

Watch your birds very carefully. I'd be appalled if anyone suddenly took it upon themselves to walk on my property with their animals like that. I wont tolerate (and dont) when the lady down the road walks her dogs up the road and then lets them into my yard... I go right out and kindly tell her please do not let the dogs urinate or poop in my yard as I do not have a dog and do not like cleaning up after others animals - if she has a bag with her to clean it up and a bottle of water to wash away urine on the grass, then thats a different story, but dog urine on my plants will not work.

Before you think about shooting a dog on your property, check the laws regarding firearms. Where I live, out in the country, it is illegal to fire a gun within 300 feet of a neighboring home. Even if you are legally justified in killing the dogs on your property, there could be consiquences for firing a gun.

One of our neighbors set a trap for "wild animals" that might harm her livestock. She was allowed to do that here. She bated it with skunk scent that you could smell at our house some 400 ft. away. Of course, what she caught in her trap were neighborhood dogs. I think she used the SSS method of disposal.

I like the SSS method.... I have a nieghbor with a black lab that a few choice words have kept him where he belongs.... The mention of my best friends Smith and Wesson may have been helpful...He has already gotten a few of my birds that got across the line... I had aviary netting which is no match for oak firewood logs.... (bad nieghbor)....I now have everything in kennels with a top on them... chain link top...inside the coop....and aviary netting... Good luck Fido....

Definetly start a paper trail with the police. Everytime he makes a threating comment or if the dogs on on your property, call and file a complaint. This way you have a defense of I tried all my options.

Is it a pit bull or bull dog? if bull dog I have one and after ten feet of jogging she needs a nap.

good luck. Some people are just A-holes

I'm really sorry about your nasty neighbor. I purchased a 10 x 10 dog kennel from Craigslist for $75. It used to hold 2 rotweilers, but now I use it to keep predators out. I cover the top with hardware cloth. Boards along the edges to keep burrowers out. Much cheeper than a fence. Good luck.

Where I live, we can shoot anything we want and everyone understands that's just how it is in farm and ranch country. If there are stray cats hanging around, we kill those too (I do not tolerate stray cats, they are not welcome to live under my deck or in my outbuildings and stalk my birdfeeders or crap in my gardens). People around here know that if it's a pet, then they better keep it at home and away from other people's property. Otherwise, it's accepted that barn cats or dogs that chase cattle, horses, or other livestock or pets WILL be killed.
But for yourself in a city, you should really try pepper spray. It shouldn't be illegal, since mail carriers and such carry it for protection. I once used it on a dog from down the road that was really nice, so I didn't want to shoot him, but I needed to convince him that he didn't like it on my property so much. It really worked, because I never saw him again. He yelped all the way home. That stuff usually comes in a small bottle with a beltclip, but for pitbulls I recommend bear spray. Comes in a BIG can and shoots like 30 feet, because you don't want to be too near them when you spray in case they get mad! Just aim for the eyes and face, and that might be just what they need to have a lifelong fear of your yard. You can probably get it at a hunting/fishing supply store. And I would probably get the little belt clip ones too, just to keep on you and family members in case of an emergency. If the owner was practically bragging about his dogs like that, maybe he's taught them to have aggressive behavior, and it's quite common for a dog like that to grab little dogs and kill them. Sometimes even little kids.
