3 new predators to worry about, ugh

Hi Hon,

Your landlord is a wonderful man. Be sure to thank him with a batch of homemade cookies. Everyone on the forum has given you such valuable information. Make sure you follow through with a call to the police dept. Have an officer come over when your mother is home so everything can be documented. Don't take this lightly. If the neighbor comes over again have him arrested for trespassing.

Get a camera for the outside if you can. Maybe you could borrow one from a friend. Do you have a cell phone that takes pictures? Keep it with you. If you are outside and he comes over dial 911. That's what the police are there for and you might feel like you are being too cautious but the police want to protect you. I'm really sorry that you have to go through this. I have a neighbor I'm dealing with and it's a scary feeling. When I go into my yard I carry mace and a cell phone and pocket knife. I've ordered a Taser (legal in NH) and it should be here next week. Hubby doesn't believe in guns. I grew up in a family that hunts and I'm comfortable with them. The legal system is slow and frustrating. I'm at the creeps mercy. I've learned a great deal being a 'lawful' citizen. Next time I won't be.

I don't want to scare you honey but be careful.

You've made quite a few great points here!!! The police are a reactionary force, not a preventative one in most cases. By knowing the laws of the land and being willing and able to protect yourself and family/pets etc... is the only responsible way to live your life imho

PS, it's harder to live as a lawful citizen the way the laws are written at times... I wish the law of common sense was used more than it is now a days.

Cheers for the landlord! But best to get his threat to vandalize your property by setting his dogs on your chickens onto the police records anyway.

If you're not old enough for a carry permit you should definitely be carrying pepper spray when you're out since you have good reason to believe that the neighbor might not be all there and that he might "accidentally on purpose" "forget" to fasten the latch on the dog kennels to "teach you a lesson".

Zahboo - So sorry to hear about your problems on a few different levels. Sounds like this beighbor lacks some respect, his dogs and his neighbors. Unfortunately - there are a lot of people like that.

1. So was he bothered by the crowing or just trying to strike up conversation? I would go ahead and file a report because whether he realizes it or not, "don't want one of my ladies to get a hold of your chicken" is a threat. What a man, like it would be the dogs fault that it might want to kill a chicken. It's the owners responsibility to make sure the dog doesn't get the chance to.

You do need to file a report. Just call your Sherriff's Office main # and say that you would like a written report filed. They should send a deputy (or may have you go in to the office) and you tell them what happened. They write a report and file it away. If this guy has recent history, they should know of him; if it ever comes up again, voila! there's a history!

2. Dog owners (but especially Bully owners) need to have respect for their dogs and do what is necessary to make sure they don't have a chance to harm anyone or anyone elses property. I have 2 Bullies (full ABPT's) and would NEVER take them into anyone elses yard!! I realize that the neighbors are afraid of them. I understand that dogs want to run around and be dogs. Whether it's sniff and pee on the plants or kill a chicken or squirrel or any other small animal, that's their nature. But I do my part to make sure they don't get the chance to and the make sure the neighbors don't have to worry about it.

3. You're neighbors can make your life easy or make your life hard, and vice versa. Luckily for you your landlord sounds like a decent fellow. I'm hoping this guy just let's it go. Just give a check as to who or what's around when you are outside. Being aware is being proactive. That's good advice no matter where you are. Hopefully all of this blows over soon and all gets quiet on the homefront!!

Good luck to you!!
