3 questions about stock dogs

From what I have heard about ridge backs is that they love to run/wander and they have strong prey drive cause they were originally bred to hunt lions.

I know some of these dogs in person, and I don't see it happening. Maybe they are braver in africa, but they are pretty meek and mild here.

All I know is what I've read on that thread and the links on it. That's interesting that you know some. I didn't know there were any in the US! I wonder if their gaurding ability is due to environment rather then instincts like the better known LGD.

My understanding is that they don't do LGD duty as we normally think of. They are not left with the livestock in the absence of the shepherds. They stay with the tribe, near the encampment, and chase off predators that come close. That could really be more simple territoriality than actual LGD work.

Interesting and it makes sense, it's the same way many people use herding dogs to guard.

We have several dogs (Duh, if you've seen My BYC Page) - including German Sheps, Anatolian Sheps, Border Collies, Labs and Queensland Heelers. Anatolians are awesome dogs, though we did have a problem with Captain's sister, who had mental problems. But I'm pretty sure that stemmed from a puppyhood trauma. Border collies are awesome for livestock. German Shepherds can be, if you train them right. Labs - definitely not. At least ours, no. Too spazy...lol Queenslands are really good livestock dogs and super smart and easy to train.

Just my two cents worth...

I was lucky enough to find a breeder and have part GP and part Anatolian...he's wonderful.

Too bad you're not closer to me, the breeder had a litter just this week.
