Hi,

I bought my first ever chicks last week and I absolutely love them!

I got 3 silkies and the breeder tried his best to find 3 x females, but he seemed a little bewildered... unsurprisingly given the apparent difficulty in sexing them. I live in a tight neighbourhood and could really do without a Cockerel. I'd be forced to send him to a different home if I had one.

They're said to be 5 months and I'm clueless. Number 1 is smaller than the other two and more friendly than the other two... I think she is almost definitely a she... she seems different altogether.

The other two, I fear are actually cockerells. Can anybody help here with a more educated guess. I'm scared to death of one crowing the neighbours awake.

Thanks in advance :)

ps I've gained so much advice and so many tips from this website re looking after chickens so thank you all!

God help me! :D Wow... Thank you. This has surprised me and blown everything I suspected with my very minimal experience out of the water. :D
I just wondered if I was missing anything obvious. I've been checking for 'streamers', checking feathers, listening for noises and watching their every move. It's got me nowhere. I guess I'm going to have to sit this one out and see if they all crow in a month or so. :D

I’m on the fence with #1, but they all do look like cockerels to me. If they are you should know soon as they usually start crowing between 4-6 months. I’m seeing streamers in the crest of 2&3, and they all are carrying wings lower like a cockerel.
Thanks. If I had to pick a favourite, it'd be 1 all day. It's an absolute beauty to handle. Not sure I could ever part with it! I'm hopeful you're right in sitting on the fence with 1. :)
