I have 20 ~ 3 wk old chicks. BO,IB,BR,AR and BO. I went down today after listening to much squawking to find a couple of the chicks chasing 1 BO and pecking at her beak and then at her rear feathers. Once they started, many other would try to join in. They seemed to settle down and stop the behavior after a few minutes.

I returned to cleaning and about 2 hrs later went back and 1 BO had blood on her feathers. I have since removed her from the others and it appears to have quieted down in the brooder, except for her. She is in a playpen along side the brooder and she is pacing and peeping watching the others as though she is being punished.

I placed some oatmeal paste on the area where they were peeking her (as advised by a fellow member) but am unsure if this is all I would need to do. And when would I return her back to her playmates (if at all) prior to them going into the coop in a few weeks.

Thanks...

I got your message on my post, but I' trying to bump this up for you.

I used blu-kote to heal and protect the buff's bare neck and it healed her up fast. Just be careful, it will paint you blue. Use betadine to clean the wounded area (peroxidde will make it so it won't heal) and then put blu-kote on. I sprayed it on a cotton ball and dabbed it on her to avoid getting in eyes and getting all over the place.

Hope this helps

Thanks again. I wondered what the *bump* on the previous post was for

. Now I know I will go get some tomorrow. I thought I was doing well until today. Talked to a neighbor tonight who also got hers at the same time I did and lost 5 out of 25. I have not lost one and that has been my fear.
