Hi All,

I am hoping someone can help me. I have 3 new baby chicks that are about 3 weeks old. All have been doing fine up until last night - kept very clean, water/food/litter changes daily and they are vaccinated. I noticed that one of them is growing noticeably slower than the others, less feathers and smaller. Last night she started with just standing in one place with her head drooping and eyes closed, not moving much at all. She has runny droppings but no blood visible in them. She has not really been eating, and sometimes she will chirp loudly and steadily for a long time. She sleeps most of the time. No runny nose/wheezing or other respiratory symptoms at all. Based on the symptoms I am afraid that it might be coccidiosis, but the chicks were all vaccinated at 1 day old. My question is can they still get cocci even after the vaccine?? They are not on medicated feed - when I first picked them up the lady at the farm store recommended a food that naturally creates a barrier in the intestines to inhibit critter growth instead of medicated, under the premise that it is healthier and more effective. Plus I read that if they are vaccinated the medicated feed will neutralize it.

I rushed to the feed store and started them on probiotics and electrolytes in their water at the recommendation of staff. They recommended against Corid because again they have the vaccine and staff told me cocci is unlikely. I live in NJ, so antibiotics are not readily available without a vet prescription.

Any advice would be much appreciated - I am very worried about my little girl!

I'm a noob to chickens too, but was in the same situation a few weeks ago with vaccinated chicks looking like possible coccidiosis, but with no blood in droppings that I could see. I opted against Corid treatment because of neutralizing the vaccine. I fed her gro-gel that I bought with the chicks, and some mash made with her feed and kept an eye on her. After a day or two she started eating and drinking, and now she is running around with the others. But she is definitely a "runt" now, along with another one who didn't have symptoms quite as severe.

So, no real advice, just my story. ;) Good luck with your poor one.

Thanks for your response, I'm going to continue with the electrolytes and probiotics and maybe try some yogurt mixed with her food and see how she does. Obviously I'm keeping a close eye on her, so if the condition gets worse I might opt for the Corid to be safe.
