I recently purchased 15 chickens from a well know hatchery. I bought their Ornamental Layer package and have no idea what most of their breeds are, but I do know they are pullets. Within a few days I lost 4 babies, all which were pretty weak from the journey from Iowa to Florida. I have also determined that one of the babies is blind, but she is managing well despite her disability.

The problem I am currently having is with one of my chicks that has always been very active and healthy. We even went as far as to name her Sassy because of her spunk. Yesterday she seemed a little more quiet then normal. She was still walking around with her sisters but she kept going into a corner by herself. Then this afternoon I realized she is having significant trouble standing and walking. When placed on even ground she wobbles and holds out her wings in an effort to regain balance. No matter what I have done her condition has not improved. She is on a medicated chicken starter and received both probiotics and vitamins in her water. I gave her extra vitamins with a syringe this afternoon and I really do not believe her weakness is due to a deficiency of some sort. I am concerned she may have something viral, a neurological condition or was injured by one of her larger sisters. Her legs move easily and without pain. They do not splay out or appear to be deformed. She is eating and drinking, but is having trouble getting herself to her dishes. I have moved her into a secluded brooder that is small and easier for her to maneuver. She is not lethargic and is peeping away while I watch her like a hawk.
Does anyone have an idea of what this sudden illness could be? Should I be worried for my other chicks? If there is anything I can do to help my Sassy girl I am happy to do it, and I really do not want to lose her. My daughters have become very attached to our remaining babies as have I. Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated.

I know it might be a challenge, but a video would help your diagnostic querry... you seem to have list quite a lot of your flock at the start.... sorry about that. Lets see what we can do about this sickly gal.....

I could not get a video to upload regardless of what I did, but here is a picture of Sassy in her new stance with her head toward the ground.

Hi,
I have a chicken about 10 weeks old. She started doing the same yesterday. We soon figured out it was a neurological injury. One of our bigger ones have injured her head, and she has trouble walking and her head is mostly always rested on the floor. She eats well and drinks. We have started giving her vitamin E recently. I would cut off the tip of a gel capsule, mix it with a teaspoon of water and make her drink it once a day. (they are 200 IU gel capsules so you should be able to give one a day to your sick chicken). And I would also separate her from other chicks so she won't get hurt even more, maybe put her in your house, by herself so she is not to stressed and doesn't get hurt more.
Hope this helps.

It's been a few days and Sassy seems to be doing a little better. She is a little stronger on her feet. She is still unsteady, but she is able to stand for longer periods of time. She has been eating and drinking well up until this point, but I've noticed her appetite is waning. I think she's getting a little depressed being away from her clutch mates and being confined to a small space. I have noticed that when she walks her legs are so close together they cross over each other and that makes her stumble. I've seen lots of ideas to correct crooked toes and splayed legs but nothing if their legs are crossed. If anyone has an idea of what I can do please help! I've been up late every night trying to come up with something.

So I know it's been a couple of days but if she's alive I suggest putting in maybe two of her sisters in with her so it's not too chaotic but she also has other chickens. When a chicken isn't around others it can make them depressed and if they are unhealthy it will just make them feel worse. This happened to one of my adult chickens a couple years ago she had a cold and it wasn't getting better so we got her to other chickens and she got better pretty fast.
