I recommend you skip the DE, if you have to dust them, use corn starch. DE is harmful if breathed to animals and people.
Why do you dust them?

Thanks for the comment on DE. I was not aware of the info. you gave. I use DE to kill the lice and have had success with it. When I dust the chicks I put just the bottoms in it. Will corn starch kill the lice?

Not likely, either will DE.
Get some permethrin dust or spray and be done with it(after 2 treatments 7 days apart or until you see no live lice).
