I am new to the forums and new to raising chickens. I purchased 12 chicks from tractor supply across a 4 week period, partly because the clerks didn't know what was what and I had to keep adding to my original 6 just to get the breeds I wanted. Australorp sold as a barred rock. RIR sold as sex links lol

Anyways. I was sold three "welsummers" that all looked the same as chicks. But at 9 weeks old all 3 look different. My big red girl, Frightful. Helga, which I assume is a silver, and my third, Glenda is all black. Glenda is presenting with black feathers, no color sheens, with yellow legs, and slight grayish colors, mostly around her face. Is she actually a welsummer? Possible Americana? Here is the best pic I mb have of the 3 "Welsummers" together.

Thanks again for your help. These forums have been life savers since the beginning of this adventure.

Welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined us!

You Have a pretty variety of chicks! I would have thought the grey one was a dark Brama but the eyes aren't quite right. So @Gray Farms may be right about her. The brown one is a Welsummer and the black one is either Australorp or Black Sex Link. All of them should be good layers. ;)

TSC is notorious for having the breeds wrong. I bought 4 Amberlink pullets from them this spring and ended up with one pullet, two roosters and a Cornish cross meat bird. :barnie

After looking at the black one again I'm reminded of a Speckled Sussex. Does she have any spots at all?

What usually happens is they have a particular breed and they combine it in a bin with other breeds that don't look alike. They either didn't put all three signs up or the signs were there but the employee was clueless. I'd expect those scenarios to be equally likely.

The black one with yellow skin could be a black sexlink, an "Asian Black", or a Jersey Giant. The silver is probably a silver Leghorn since I think I see yellow feet that belong to her.

They definitely just throw them in the box. After my first mishap, I took greater control over which chicks and their sex, ended up in my box lol.

The black chicken looked just like the welsummer and leghorn as a chick, so that rules out a jersey giant or sexlink. And it is unlikely an Asian black, for the same reason. I am at a loss trying to i.d. her.
