3 yr old hen prolapsed, broken egg shell came out of her vent

Welll on the cod liver oil, just a little please. More is not necessarily better. (WHich is why I suggest spraying it on - so it's a light application).

Her improvement is great news! The little sister is not great news. Try a tums crushed and a *little* cod liver oil to her.

Hopefully she'll catch up with her big sis.

And another update: The prolapse is OK, the girls seems all fine. Still in my hospital crate, because I want to do a second round of de-worming after 10 days.

Her sister concerns me still: She is in another hospital crate, does not seem to eat or drink much. I gave her tums via syringe on Wednesday, but no improvement. She has ACV/vitamin/Electrolyte water, regular layer crumble with free choice grit and oyster shell. I tried yogurt, meal worms, hard boiled egg yolk, but she does not seemed interested. Remember, a few days ago I checked the crop and it seemed OK. Today I am not that sure anymore. Of course she had the diarrhea problem, egg residue around her cloacae (no shell), but maybe now in addition to that her crop does not empty properly. No smell, it is not hard at all and not overly big, however early this morning it was filled a little bit what seemed to be mostly fluid. She is alert and interested in her surroundings, except food. I need to take the food and water away overnight to check again in the morning. The problem now is, what else to do, as she is already on all the beneficial stuff for a week now, even though she has barely touched it. Syringe oil would be my next step, too early for crop surgery (I have done that before successfully). Any better ideas?

I'd wait to reworm til it's been 3 or four weeks on these guys.

From the first worming.

On the sister, try the vitamins directly in the beak since she's not eating: polyvisol without iron, 3 drops daily. ZTry giving her a little egg yolk (boiled) mashed in water with honey or karo or another sugar syrup - just a few sips. OR parrot baby feeding formula from Kaytee or Exact. ZThat will contain the probiotics, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, everything they need in a much more concentrated dose that you can give to her as a paste a coiuple of times a day - sort of like "Ensure" for chickens.

On her crop, are you certain she didn't just drink early this morning? And yes - I'd do the overnigh check and make sure. Barely touching the beneficial stuff probably still just keeps her too weak to heal. And I would not at all do oil yet as you only felt liquid, no solids. And not at all crop surgery yet either.

Is she retaining an egg? Did you check her vent, etc? (forgive me if you've said already)

Very frustrating. I'm sorry you're having to go through this.

Again, what are her droppings like just now?

Quick question (sorry I just moved here from Europe a few years ago, so not familiar with all the products and were to get it): "Polyvisol is a pediatric product and I would get it at a pharmacy store correct?
I know "Karo", have good honey at home, but what is ZTry or ZThat and were would I get that? Baby Parrot feed is easy to find at my neighborhood pet store.

She is not retaining an egg and her droppings are ...., well she does not eat, so almost no droppings and if so, it just sticks to her rear end feathers......

I am not sure about the crop this morning. That is, why I want to take food and water away tonight.

Oh man, it sucks, she is the original "Grand Dame" which started my poultry life in the US.

Yes, polyvisol is a baby vitamin but, oddly, you find it in the vitamin section, not in the baby section at a pharmacy or other big stores. And Karo, honey, some form of syrupy sugar (versus crystallized or granulated sugar) for the energy of it.

The clinging droppings - that can be anything, but it seems to be more often associated with egg laying problems when it's whitish. I'm sure there's some scientific explaination for that which I haven't yet looked up, but at the least there's a bacterial imbalance (at least secondarily) and possibly a little too much yeast in the system when that happens. So that's why probiotics an be of use.

Oh and it's always the favorite ones to which this happens. Somewhere, there's a Manual on How to Be a Chicken, sure - that says on chapter 28 "Be sure if you're the flock favorite to come up with at least ONE mystery ailment which will drive your loving owner crazy." /sigh

Sad news: The little sister did not make it. She died this morning and her last minute was not fun to watch.

I do not know what else I could have done for her. Did the parrot baby formula last night, but the crop was not empty this morning. However, I know that the crop thing was just a secondary problem.

Threehorses, Thank You so much for hanging in with me. You have helped us so much and at least we saved the big sister who will go back in the main coop tonight with her other friends.

Darnit, I was afraid she wouldn't. She just didn't seem to have the 'will' to do so.

I'm so very sorry. And yes - death is never pretty at all, but know that she was probably gone before her body appeared to be. Also do know you tried so much. And yes - the crop was secondary to some over all issue.

Lots of hugs.

I just had a 1 year old with a broken egg inside her. After reading this site I took fast action and gave her a very warm water soak. I carefully inserted my finger inside her vent and removed the broken shell I felt there while in the water so the lubericant was presant and she was not dry. After pulling out the shell I could get at I used a several more warm water baths then I lubericated inside her vent with Prep-H. While blowing her dry cradled in my arm she passed the other half of the egg. It all appears to have come out as the pieces assembled make a complete shell. The prep-H gave her comfort and helped with the healing. The very warm water was relaxing to her and that allowed her to work the rest of the egg out. To help her recover after passing the egg she is drinking sugar water and eating hardboiled egg with 2 finly ground egg shells mixed in for added calcium. My hens lay very hard eggs usually, but this was an oversized egg.
