Hi! I'm finally delurking to ask your all's opinion on Penguin's eye. I just noticed it in the last few hours. She's already been messed up in that eye since she was maybe 6 months old. The rooster attacked her when I tried for the second time to introduce her to the flock (I'll never make that mistake again) and at the time, it was swollen and closed up, with sawdust in it, so I cleaned it and used triple antibiotic lotion on her. It looked okay at first but a few months later the pupil started breaking up so that it was blotched black and brown all over (she's half EE, half BA so she has naturally brown eyes.) It looks like it's blind, but when she looks at me she usually favors that side, so I'm not sure if she can see through it or not.

Anyway, when I checked her a little while ago, the eye looks more swollen than usual (it's always stuck out a little), it's sort of turned white on the surface, and it's got some ooze or pus coming out of it. I went ahead and used some eye wash on her, but what do you think? Could it be an accidental injury? (All my meaner birds have died off this year, so I never see any fighting.) Or is this some kind of infection? It doesn't look like bubble eye or anything like that. Can it be a natural progression of her blindness?

I uploaded before and after pictures but I can't post them because I'm new (is there a way to get around that? It said no urls either so I can't give you the photobucket link.)

I guess I can always add them when I get up to ten posts? Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions you might have!

Hi and
welcome-byc.gif
If I was you I'd try to get some terramycin eye ointment it's an antibiotic salve. and use it for a couple of days hopefully you'll see improvement, if not you might want to run a course of antibiotics internally also. Sorry sickness has brought you to BYC but glad your here. let us know how she is..

Thanks Miss Lydia! Is that something I can find at Tractor Supply?

I can post pictures now. Here is what the eye looks like:

And here is what it normally looks like (a face only a mother could love--but she's much cuter on the other side)
