Chicken wire is basically useless...I had some that I used to plant fruit trees with and I used some only inside my coop to divide my service area from the main coop. Any predator can rip through the stuff and
I recently discovered that a dog can grab a birds feathers through it. I would use the hardware cloth. Most people seem to go with the 1/2" x 1/2" stuff and I will too (I haven't gotten that far).

I have four dogs and we still get wild animals snooping around. No, the scent of a dog will not deter predators. In fact, it may attract some predators like coyotes.
