Hi!

Do you's know them stupid little house bed things hamsters live in? Well I am never using them again! I had my two hamsters out yesterday and I put them back to bed and when shutting the top back on, I made sure none of their legs where sticking out, but one mus have slipped through and I shut it down on its leg! It didn't squeek or anything, so I didnt know and just walked off. A few hours later I went back and opened it and just saw the hamsters purple foot and I was like "what?! that can't be right!" and then I saw blobs of blood on the cotton and I thought maybes they had been fighting because they have fell out over the past week. But nope. I picked him up and his leg was hanging off and the bone was sticking out. I was getting so upset because I knew it was my fault, so I phones the emergency vet (it was at night so out of work hours) and they said they would meet me up at the vets. I went up and as soon as they saw him they said "This can't be fixed. I think its best to euthenize him" and I said "Cant you amputate it?" and they said "I dont know how hamster do with 3 legs" and I said "my friends hamster only had 3 legs" so they looked in their vet book and that confirmed it so they said they will try. There was no garuntee that he would make it through the night and no garuntee he would make it through the operation. After a sleepless night and sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for a phone call from the vets, I eventually got a call saying he has made it through the op but there was still no garuntee until after 72 hours. I have got meds that I have to syringe into him and they said he probably wont want to eat or drink himself. But I have just went down now and he is picking up the bits of food I sprinkled on the floor and then had a drink! I was so proud of him! I'm praying he makes it. I never knew I would get so attached to him! It cost me £173 all together but because I work at the petshop (the petshop is owned by the same owner as the vets)I got a discount and it was £87 pound in the end. But it was worth it, I would have felt even worse then I do if I didn't give him a chance.
