History: About a month ago my pair of chicks (1 pullet and 1 cockerel) started dropping feces with lots of what appeared to be shed lining. They were just under two months old at the time and living in my house. It varied from cherry to orange colored stringy stuff some had drops of blood. I tried corid for a week with no change. A vet did me a one time favor of running a fecal-found nothing- and called in a script for trimethoprim sulfa. They were fine a few days later.

A cpl weeks later it started again, this time the dripping were chick full of chick grit. I mean teaspoons of the stuff. I found that they’d eaten the entire bowl the day before-possibly thinking it food. I removed the grit and the droppings seemed to improve. Thinking I’d fixed the issue I’ve since moved them outside. They act fine but every morning I see one pile of poop that looks like the attached picture. I’m certain it’s my young male. I’d been thinking just more shed lining as it’s typically been reddish but today I’m not sure anymore. Not that I was ok with regular shedding of lining…that doesn’t seem right to me.

IS THIS ACTUALLY WORMS???

If so, these birds are growing their adult feathers-what can I safely give them? The first pic is today. The others are what I had previously been seeing. Currently 1-1.25kg in weight, 3mo faverolle chickens.

It's not worms. I recommend Endocox which contains Toltrazuril. Here's where you can order it:
https://birdpalproducts.com/products/endocox-powder
The product is arriving today…
My young male seems to have cleared whilst waiting for meds but this morning the roosting spot of his sister was full of gloppy red droppings. Unless they switched spots for the night but I doubt that as she’s got some messy tail feathers. It must be in the environment??? Any way to kill it??? We had a cold snap then back to 80s a few days ago.

Treatment…Am I treating just the affected birds or the whole flock with this product? I have a mixed breed/ age flock including polish and an old flock leader who has dire reactions to antibiotics. I mention this only as I don’t want to indescriminsntly give meds to unaffected birds if there’s a risk.

Just treat the affected birds. Coccidia is everywhere in the environment. There's no way to eliminate it. Keeping waterers and feeders feces free and cleaned on a regular basis deters coccidiosis. Do your best to keep coops clean, scoop poop often throughout the day. Hopefully, as your birds grow, they will eventually build resistance to coccidiosis infections.
Do not give the affected birds anything containing thiamine while treating them with the Endocox, nor with a sulfa drug nor with amprolium.

What’s strange is that this year is the first I’ve ever seen this- early summer I saw a few of my 4 yo flock with similar albeit much fewer droppings. (Two with the gloppy red another with watery white) The labs couldn’t give me clarity but one’s blood was tested and had a strong infection and they were all put on tripethaprim sulfa and seemed to recover. I do also have several bottles of it as the vet overprescribed the volume. If that would be a better…the pills are on hand,

The flocks free range in my backyard. (3 groups- 4.5 yrs, 1.5yrs and the two new youngsters hatched here) I pick out all coop dropping daily and their run weekly but there’s still the yard. I just don’t know why this appeared suddenly. 😞Would hosing down all the droppings help? It’s been a dry year-doesn’t rain for weeks at a time.

Did you have anything delivered this year? Soil, mulch? I wonder if wild bird droppings can introduce it as well. I haven't had anyone with cocci either, thought I was safe 🧐

Yes I built new shade gardens out back where they live this past spring. We have clay soil do it was amended with store bought dirt and black kow compost. The compost was blamed for my roosters death-pathology indicated aspergillosis fungal balls in his throat and lungs.

It’s been three days since I finished the course of meds on both young birds and I’m still seeing intestinal lining being shed in the overnight/first morning poops. *sigh*

They are both growing and acting normal. None of the rest of the flock is showing any of the same droppings. Do their bodies need more time to clear the offending parasite or Is it time to bring out the trimethoprim sulfa ?
