3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Well, I set a few eggs for the NYD hatch. My Silkies only laid 7 eggs in the week prior to the set date, but I set them all.

All my previous attempts at hatching my Silkie's eggs were unsuccessful (they're young and everything's candled clear so far), but I keep setting and hoping.

Weird!! All of the Iowa Blues that hatched here are almost solid black!

Yeah, most of them are. They grow up to look like the ones in Story's book:

The ones born chocolate get a lot of lacing:

As you can see we have a long way to go to get a uniform flock

Well, I was going to wait until day 10 or so to candle but last night, I had no choice... I turned them and the bator smelled HORRIBLE!!

Something told me I was going to have problems with a few of them because the lady told me that a few were older so I just marked them with an "O" and the newer ones with an "N"... Well, I pitched the leaking egg out the back door and as soon as it hit the ground, it exploded!! Glad that wasn't in the bator!! I put the flashlight up to each egg and if it was "clear", I left it alone and didn't touch it.. If it had a "shadow" in it, I picked it up and candled it... I found two others that had a shadowy mass so those got pitched out the back door also!

I think she got the eggs mixed up because the ones I pitched were all supposed to be newer eggs (only a little over a week old when I set them)... The incubator smells MUCH better now!! LOL

I will candle again on day 10 unless I come across another "issue"... Fortunately, I did notice veining in a bunch of them!!

It is my understanding this is what we want the pullets to look like.
I borrowed Kari's picture here.

Here's my entry for the calendar contest......for the month of October.

Edited to clarify it's my second entry.....one more to go. I've found one thing out trying to take pics for this contest....it's nearly impossible to find holiday items when it's not THAT holiday! Even the junk stores put their out of season stuff in storage.
