3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

I am sorry about Miss Puffles.....

My chicks are getting so big they are outgrowing the brooder box!

After work today, I'll be separating the larger chicks to a grow out pen, so that the smaller ones have room to grow!

Mine are about at that point, too. And they've started roosting, at least during the day. I just don't have anywhere at the time being to put them.

Kowalski had some issues this morning. When I came downstairs to his brooder this morning he was on the ground, flapping and squawking like crazy and pushing himself in a circle with one leg. The other leg didn't work. I picked him up and comforted him (as much as I could comfort a duck that doesn't like to be held) and moved his bad leg a bit. It felt really weak like there was no "power" going to it, no resistance. I did that for a while, weighing my options. I figured I had to off him, but the other 4 ducks were hungry and demanding, so I put him back in the brooder to go get their breakfast and off him when I came back. Surprisingly when I put him in the brooder he was able to walk again, normally. I have no idea what that was about, but I'm glad I didn't have to off him.

That was an emotional roller coaster catching up these last few posts. Sad about the losses and problems and happy about births and saves! Such is life I guess.

I'm very sorry about losses and happy about wins. I nearly had to report miserable losses, as well, as my 4 Silkied Ameraucana hens got lost in the mail and were days late arriving. 3 days late. Very bad.

Fortunately they are alive and seem well. I have eggs due in the next few days...dunno when as I forgot to mark them

So now we know who bought the silkied Ams!

Moved 2/3rds of the NYD chicks from the Laree brooder to the grow out pen. They are all much more comfortable now.

And the booted SFH seems to be doing MUCH better.

I left 9 in the Laree brooder, including the Lav. Am, SFH, #29 and the 3 candidates to be the other SFH... (they could be Icelandics too) as well as the purebred Wheaten Am... and I'm thinking it's a pullet

... I really wanted a roo.

All of the others in the grow out pen are doing good. 5 Chipmunk Icelandics, 4 whitish Icelandics, a black Icelandic, 4 FBCMs and a goodly number of EEs, including my bargain black EE... but it's looking rooish.

I've been watching the 49ers and the Saints and it looks like SF is going to win this unless Breeze can be protected and then kick it in gear. Can't wait to watch Tebow vs. Brady tonight.

So, I'm headed up the mountain and then I'll get Sunday dinner ready for the oven. I hope it doesn't rain like it's forecast to do.
