3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

My little bantam EE hen, Angel, surprised the heck out of me the day after Thanksgiving by presenting me with nine little day old chicks she hatched in a hidden nest. They are ALL the same color, little dark chickie-boos! Usually my broody hens hatch eggs from several hens. Plus, these are all bantam chicks, not a single bigger one.

And I just won an auction from bargain, so I'm hoping Nancy can ship eggs closer to Dec 5, so I can set them for this Hatch. That would make a dozen pure, but mixed from different breeding pens, eggs from her, a dozen Trader Joe eggs, and a few mutt eggs of my own. (I'm gonna compare "home grown" to shipped and market egg hatching rates.)

Once it gets closer, I'll fill out the form.

pics pics pics we need pics of your surprises!

Well, okay then. Luckily, she brought the chicks near the open people door into the coop, but promptly covered them when I came in with the camera.

So I had to get her to move so I could get some shots of the chicks. She was not happy.

But one little straggler stayed back to look at me.

awwww Linda they're so cute. I love their little markings.

I was trying to check everywhere to see if I could scrounge up change for Bargain's auction, but then I saw your name. Didn't have anything to put towards them anyway, so no bid. I just figure I get half for being a good sport. Broke or not. LOL

Can't wait to see pics of them though when they hatch.

Not surprising, as I have 3 bantam roosters with feathered feet: Charlie Buff Brahma, Nugget Mottled Cochin, and Frick mottled Cochin. So if they're Angel's eggs (and I suspect they are, although I have other laying bantam hens) then they're either bantam EE/bantam Brahma or bantam EE/bantam Cochin.

And wolftracks, I was surprised I won that auction. I had three on which I was bidding and two of them were for Silkie hens, on a whim. I have no silkies, I have not wanted silkies, I don't want any silkie eggs to hatch, but the chance to give two, possibly three laying silkies a good home seemed like a good thing. You know how auctions can make ya nuts! I didn't win those two auctions and was glad to see somebody who bid more than once got 'em.

I won the auction I wanted: different breeds in one fell swoop!

I saw that. Was so tempting, but I did good to click off, especially when I saw you were bidding. I tell ya though, once those survivor benefits are granted from the VA

I'm buying me some really pretty eggs from some really nice stock. Till then I need to remember I can come in here and look at pics. Then again when ya see those pictures it kind of makes you want to hatch anything you can grab up. LOL

it amazes me that she had nine fluffies under her in those first few pictures. they are such cute little things.
i saw an earlier post from mahonri about setting trader joes eggs and thought it was a joke but i just read the trader joes hatching thread and am completely amazed. i think i may do that as well since this is my first hatch and i dont want to be completely overrun with chicks. plus i dont know what i am doing so want the cheapest eggs i can get. and what a story to tell my friends...

I've hatch a couple of the TJ eggs. Linda has some she hatched out. The first eggs I ever hatched was back in the 6th grade and those eggs were store eggs too. That or from our milkman. OK Yeah I'm old. LOL Oakland had milkmen till I was in junior high. LOL
