That is a very sad story. Poor mamma hen! I'd give you some of my chicks for her if I lived remotely near you which I likely don't as I don't live remotely near anyone really. Maybe she'll be interested in adopting in a few weeks? Raccoons are terrible! I lost one of my first chickens about 10 years ago to a Raccoon before I knew that I had to make sure they were inside the coop at night, it reached through the chain link and left nothing but feathers. I have not lost a bird since it upset me so much. Now I try to build bomb proof. sorry for your loss. People think Raccoons are so cute, and they are but they are also predators. My sister has someone who lives near her ranch that thinks it's a good idea to regularly feed the Coyotes!? Ay ay ay!
Also how do you like your Barred Hollands? Do they lay white eggs? I've heard they are pretty rare and the line is having some trouble and as such people often have BHs that don't lay white eggs. I'm interested in the breed, I've started raising California Greys, another barred white egg layer.

Here are my 24 eggs, in the chance that I have a real bad hatch -- haven't had one yet...

Blarneyeggs, Racoon mamas with young with teach them to kill. Part of the strategy is to have one or more on one side and others on the opposite side to scare them "into" the waiting hands. Racoons can reach through and grab things and pull them through small openings. They will return if they've been successful. I hope your DH catches them all!

Wow only a page and a half since I was at work? Something's not right.

Those of you running contests open to EVERYONE including non-hatchers, PM me. I'll change the rules and update, since we had that question.

And Mrheinz... pictures of your bator are great but now I MUST see your brooders and outdoor pens. Curiosity you know.

. Yes, too sad a story for this thread, I'm afraid, I'll try to stay more upbeat. Thanks for your kindness and advice. My Barred Hollands do lay cream colored eggs, and are a bit undersized as well, I plan on really working on them this coming summer.

That's an impressive load of eggs! Best wishes for your hatch. Question tho, is that tube coming out of the bator for adding water without opening the bator?

That's nothin' I once set 100 eggs in my Hovabator! No stacking either!
