Feeding Wild Birds

Few birds that are here are hitting the feeder hard. Four inches of snow predicted for us so I guess they know too. I'll top it off at dusk so I'm not walking in the snow tomorrow morning. Chickens are already taken care of.

Our wild birds are eating from the feeders like crazy, it's cold here. We stocked up on seed and suet yesterday. This is mid January temps not December. It's not supposed to get above zero today.

A pileated woodpecker spent at least half an hour cussing at me from the West hedgerow as I was putting up Christmas decorations.

Feeders have been slow until earlier this week. I've seen Brown Thrashers and Pine warblers eating the peanut butter suet. Everything is now filled up, ready for an unseasonable cold forecast for Sunday evening.

I have had a couple in the last few years. They scare the chickens. First time she scared me also, I thought it was a hawk.

Quite common here. Sandy produced a lot of downed/dead trees, and now there are lots of dead Ash trees for them to feed on. There's an old maple stump on the front yard. This summer I noticed that something was digging around it - thought it was a skunk until I saw a Pileated working the roots for ants/grubs/etc.

The Pileated are very common here, a nuisance at times when they peck on your house.
