I have hatched thousands of eggs, and I have never had a "started," egg explode. The exploding eggs I have had were rotten eggs.

It's been a while since I've had a rotten egg. most of the time they don't rot, but just sit intact until the hatch is over.

If it has a smell or an odd color, then it's rotten. If there is no smell and it has retained a normal color, then it is just an infertile egg or a quitter.
