There is a reason why the look on the kitty's faces were not photograped... I call my largest cat, a professional assasin. He is that good. He can spot and catch a mouse in 5 seconds or less. I no longer have a gopher problem!

well kapoohie on the feather sexing then. it appears I have two of each, whatever that now means. All my other chickies went to their new home where they will be totally spoiled by a 14 y.o. 4H gal.

Hey, what does 'cull' mean, in poultry standards? Someone told me it was selling off unwanted, un show-stock worthy birds, and I READ, in an actual book called 'Chickens' exact defintion: to eiminate a bird from the flock. No clue on what term ELIMINATE, stands for. I could never kill a bird just because it was ugly! Ivenevr intentionally killed an animal. Xcept bugs...

Many folks cull birds permanently, when the bird is mean, or too ill to survive without extraordinary care, or when it's not to standard. That is, eliminate from ANY flock, not just the original one. Kill.

Other folks cull and re-home, or sell.

Just wanted to post some photos of my chicks. (only 5 out of 22 eggs made it.)
Here is my entry for cutest chick from NYD hatch:

Cull does mean, "to eliminate from the flock;" yes. There are numerous ways to cull. You can sell them, give them away, butcher and eat them, or simply move them into a different flock (not in a breeders pen). I often cull hens from my breeders and move them into my layers coop. I also have a freezer full of nice fresh home-grown chicken! YUMMY!

I'll never use the word cull. I accidentaly steppedon my favourite chicken when I was 9, I think that was the last time I cried over a bird's death. He was my fav, I think he was from my very first hatch. I watched him die, crying, and the worst part was knowing I caused it. TT~TT

I still wonder how people can raise something from birth, like they would a child, and then kill and eat it! I can see buying birds from other people, but still... sorry if I offend anyone. It's just my opinion.

Topic change, I don't think any of my birds are perfect for breeding, for plumage and combs, since most are mixes. But who knows? I may have a perfect beauty and not even know.

Unfortunately I had to cull 3 of the chicks I helped hatch. I have no idea when I will learn.

9 times out of 10, this happens. I guess as long as there is still that one, I will continue to help.
