3rd Nest of the Season!

So perfect!
The price of fame...PB will pretend he doesn't know us if he sees us on the street!

Sadly true... but at least he will be able to afford a good therapist

PeaLover130 wouldn't happen to be the aforementioned youngest would she? And where are you located? If you are close enough that I could have delivered PB I'm gonna cry!

Sigh... yes. PB's sibling isn't the only precocious one. Once they have computers and internet access... sigh. Although it did take me a good half hour after I busted her on the posting to think to ask, "and BTW, where did you get an email account to register with?" I'm a little slow

on this computer stuff.

We are in New Mexico, much too far to have picked up Poop Baby (although we would have loved to have him), but it sounds like he is in a perfect spot. Having the guinea keets around will be good too, so he won't be so much physically bigger than everyone else and become too much of a bully.

There were free range (to the point of being feral) guineas in our neighborhood (at our house down south), and for a long time, there was a lone turkey hen that was part of the flock. That was funny to see. I hatched 30-40 eggs from them one year, but had to give them away when we moved.

You just can't believe how many eggs the guinea hens will pile in a single hole... We'd find the nests in the alfalfa fields when they got mowed.

Have been trying to restrain my own hatchaholic tendencies until I can get the pen situation straightened out here. Not a house/neighborhood conducive to having lots of critters, but sometimes we have to make do and bloom where we are planted...
hmm.png
Anyway, no doubt I will succumb next spring... We had a couple fertile eggs (first year laying) from the lone peahen this year, but a badly timed power outage did them in, along with a couple internet eggs that were also developing well. Once you have the incubator, it's sooo hard to stop!

Thanks so much for all the updates on PB -- we are all in love with the little guy

And of course, welcome to the Peafowl section, this is the place to come if you have any questions regarding the care, feeding and medicating of Peas. You will get an answer quicker here than anyplace else.

@poobabysdaddy -- there's also a peafowl-specific forum for the UPA, but things over there have been really, really slow for a long time... BYC really is the quickest place to get answers these days. If you join the UPA, there's a member's only section of the forum that has interesting information (plus joining the UPA is not a bad thing), but there's not a lot of updating going on. Which is pretty much why I'm here on BYC

If I recall correctly, the UPA convention is this coming weekend, in Ohio. Here's a link: http://www.unitedpeafowlassociation.org/2014UPAonvention.html If that's not too far away, you might even be able to arrange to pick up a Pea-Buddy for Poop-Baby

there is also a peacock group on facebook i am apart of with members all over the country.....faron si scarberry is me.....add me and i cant give you links to the other groups

Thank you so much!

And to your second question,
Yes, I am the aforementioned youngest.
jumpy.gif
I had to go hide from Mom because I made an account on BYC without telling her and she found out when I posted that comment.

I have now promised her to only post stuff with her permission and review. She says it's okay for me to be on here because I have chickens. But unfortunately, we're too far away to have adopted Poop Baby.

I also have some name suggestions for Chick #1. If it's a girl: 1. Lilac 2. Ariana 3. Glory 4. Tiara 5. Coral 6. Anemone 7. Tsunami. If it's a boy: 1. Fjord 2. Olympus 3. Zeus 4. Argos 5. Clay 6. Peril 7. Horizon. Hope you like them!

Hello there precocious youngest child! Welcome to BYC we are very glad to have you join us, but next time get Mom's okay first!

I guess you really are too far away, so at least I do not feel like I missed an opportunity there. I love the names you have suggested and based on the little one's behavior so far, I think Tsunami or Zeus would both be appropriate, so we shall wait and see what gender it ends up being. Hopefully we will get some PB pics now and then.

Looks like we both have our hands full with precocious young-uns. At least its this forum which seems to be very secure, and you are here as well. The internet is a darn scary thing sometimes.

We have guineas as well only 3 of them and all turned out to be males so we don't have to worry about eggs there, which is fine with me, 3 are noisey enough. Sorry to hear about your power outage I just bought one of those adapter cables so I can run it off my car or lawn mower battery if that happens, we lost power for about 9 hours, but we were able to keep the bator running with a generator.

remember i just hatched out 20 guineas and i know where ya live....lol/........i know who needs some females if i get to many....lmaoooooo

And I completely agree about the scariness of the internet... Fortunately older brother is our designated in-house IT expert, and we just got done removing malware and replacing security stuff on her machine last week. But am trying to monitor carefully, computer viruses and malware being the least of my worries...

I never did figure out how to tell the male guineas from the female ones -- the keets were only a few weeks old when we had to re-home them. The flock that blew noisily through the yard every day looked pretty much identical. Apparently the guineas could tell, since there were LOTS of eggs. They reproduced like... I dunno, I can't think of anything that was as prolific as those darned guineas. They were always blocking the road, and really noisy. I think maybe some of the neighbors started eating them when they got tired of dealing with them tearing up the yards [Hmmm, I don't see an emoticon for fried chicken...] The ones I hatched went to a ranch outside of town in an effort to establish a free range flock out there. I dunno how it worked out; I suspect most of them became coyote snacks. Once they are grown, it's pretty clear they can hold their own against the predators, if they have a big enough flock. I wouldn't mind having guineas around, but it's for sure not going to work here. I'm halfway surprised the neighbors are putting up with the noise from our Peas.

That's a great idea on the battery backup. I wasn't home when the power went down, so I'm afraid the eggs would have been goners, but having a back up power source would definitely add a margin of safety. I was thinking about looking into a computer battery UPS, but your solution makes more sense...

Thanks for your kind words to PYC. She's our designated in-house naming expert and very excited to be here participating in the forum
