3rd Nest of the Season!

Update on my Runty - I accidentally killed him last night... I had him out of brooder in a small box on the couch and my cat curled up on the box and squished/suffocated him.

I feel horrible. He probably wouldn't have lived as I think he had some sort of heart/lung defect that was causing him to have breathing problems (purple skin and purple legs), but I still feel awful.

Oh that is terrible, I am so sorry to hear that. It is not your fault though, so don't blame yourself.

Sometimes these things are meant to be and they happen for a reason.

Forgot to mention that those 14 old, improperly stored eggs were all blanks, but I still try again, 'cause my stupid hen started laying again!

Don't birds require grit in the crawl to process worms or run the risk of getting compacted?

While he was with me I was adding a small pinch of chick grit to the medicated starter. I do that right from day 1 with my chicks.

I would suggest continuing to put a little in with the food, I do it until they are on the ground and can find their own.
