4/10 Cackle Hatch Date, 4/11 arrival - Two sick, one died

I ordered 20 total, which included 5 silkies (bantam). 3 Silkies have died (2 DOA and another two days later).

The two sick ones that died were a Blue Polish and tonight an EE.

My first mail order batch was from My Pet Chicken, and that was 12. I lost none from that shipment.

There was some runny poop, too.

I've ordered from cackle three different years, and this year things aren't going so well. My chicks were also shipped April 10th, and so far 7 out of 35 have died! Horrible! It was very cold coming to Michigan last week, and I think shipping stress. NEVER have I had such losses!!! I think another chick isn't doing well either.
I plan to call the hatchery tomorrow, and it's really been very sad here.

Mary,
Sorry for your losses. I do hope other people suffering abnormal numbers of loses from Cackle (or other places) speak up. They cancelled my order of Lav Americauna one week before shipment. I’m not impressed and would not order from there again. It was 70 here in WNC when my Chicks arrived, and I was very surprised they arrived within one day. I’ve heard of other shipment issues this year with them online.

Someone recently here on a thread had some chicks from the same hatchery that came with one chick having 2 frostbitten feet. She brought them into her house and had them under a heat lamp immediately, so the frostbite did not happen at home. So far the chick has lost one foot and 2-3 toes on the other foot.

Eek, poor chicks!!

I’m happy to report that no further loses nor sick looking chicks this morning. So death toll is 5/23. They are all getting treated with Nutri-Drench and Corid.

Wonder if it's a hatchery issue, weather conditions or quality of stock ... My girlfriend texted me this morning (Post #10), she lost more chicks over the weekend, down to 5 survivors but they're looking weak. McMurray replacing the loss, said it's probably "mishandled or go cold" they were still in the 72hr time frame of not needing food/water, Gro Gel was place in with them.

I found out that a Dels/TSC this year has changed the hatchery they're getting their chicks from. Girl told me somewhere in OR, prior years was TX. I thought of ordering but the distance & loosing a day on Oahu/Dept of Ag (quarantine) not sure I want to deal with the stress. Even fertile eggs must go that route via mail, hand carried on the airlines must also stop & get inspected on Oahu. Crazy.
