First it was our golden campine hen Callie, locked all the chickens up for a night and then forgot last night... They had been wandering free-range for about a year undisturbed. We have a livestock guard dog who has done a great job for about 3 years, and knows very well not to touch the chickens, and gets very upset at any threats.
He usually sleeps inside at night.
The day Callie got torn apart (no neck broken, breast eaten, not typical coyote at all) I found very little evidence. She had to have sat out there for more than 4 hours before I found her at 8 am.
This morning I knew something was wrong because our dog flipped out, he was on his morning patrol, he checks the whole yard every morning when he is let out. He saw one of the dead hens and started barking as loud as he could (caught my attention as I was inside) as I watched, his hackles raised up and he ran to the other end of the yard still barking with his hackles raised until I cam out. I found one pullet, 3 month old Australorp named pie, one wing and both legs torn off, next, I found the first hen that he had found Twinkie the buff orpington mix, she had one leg torn off and her back feathers about 100 yards away. Then finally... and this one hurts the worst... Our duck Sam, who had been setting on eggs. She was whole, with her neck broken.
It looks like whatever did it played with them, and stayed far away from their coop.
And a rooster was out for some reason.
All I have found is a few paw prints that weren't my dog's as he is large and these were medium or smaller.
Something like this, would be typical of someone's domestic dog getting in our yard would it not?
