4 day old Chick - Sick???

Hi all,

My baby Buff Orpingtons are 4 days old now. I just noticed that one of them is much smaller than the others and isn’t as active. One of her eyes is also closed. As far as I know she has been eating and drinking. There is no poop stuck to her or anything.

Any advice?

I am probably the least experienced person here but I will tell you what I would do at this point. I would get some electrolytes into the chick. If it wont drink, use a syringe without the needle or a dropper but be careful not to give but a drop at a time. If you have access to any yogurt with live cultures, that may help give the chick extra nutrition. You can mix some chick starter with water and make a mush and try giving that to the chick watered down by syringe or dropper. Anything to keep it going and give it energy. I don't have any other suggestions. Hopefully someone with more experience will answer you soon. Hope all works out.

Possibly this chick got stepped on or squished in the sleeping pile. She might benefit from being isolated for a bit until she gets stronger. If she gets lonely and cries, you can put one or two of your mellower chicks in with her for company.

I wanted to thank you both for your responses!

and I am happy to report that she seems to be doing better.

I have been giving her some extra TLC... and honey water with a spoon. (Which she drinks right up)

She is perkier and her eye finally opened up!

she is still smaller than the others... but hopefully she will continue to improve and get bigger.
