If you cant keep and show chickens, you can still do embryology and poultry science projects. There are a heap of poultry-related events, such as judging (practicing the skills you would need to be a judge at a poultry show) and Avian Bowl, which is a knowledge competition. You can also get to know other people who have chickens and you can help them. You may be able to keep a chicken or two at someone else's farm, or borrow a chicken from someone to show.

I was active in the Illinois 4-H horse program when I was a kid, and it is remarkably similar in structure to Pennsylvania's poultry program. You can get to know a lot of people who will help you.

I was on the Horse Bowl team and did very well. This got me noticed by a leader of a farm-oriented club (I had been in a home-economics oriented club), who invited me to join her club and ride her horses. This in turn lead me to that chance to lease and show her horses, and after several years of working my butt off to prove to my parents I was responsible (as many members here have already suggested to you) I got my horse.

Meanwhile, I continued to do well in the 4-H horse program. I did well in Horsebowl and got to travel to Harrisburg, PA to compete in the Nationals. I got to go to the University of Illinois for Conference. (That is where you spend a week on the campus learning all about a topic that interests you.) I met many wonderful people and had a wonderful time.

I highly recommend you join 4-H. there are many opportunities to learn and be around chickens, even if you cannot keep some in your yard. In addition, 4_H offers many other projects in almost any area you can imagine, form needlepoint to leadership, and every kind of pet or farm animal there is.

Try to call them right away, however, like first thing Monday. If you call the state office, they will give you the number for your county extension office. When you get that person on the phone, explain to them that you are specifically interested in doing poultry and want to join a poultry-oriented club. (Many clubs have specialties. for example, all the horse people in a certain area may have clustered on one club, while the poultry people may be in another club.) They will need your paperwork soon. Sign up for the chicken project immediately if there is a deadline--you can always resign later.

I hoe this helps you. I worked for about 5 years before I got my horse, so I know how you feel. Good luck and keep us posted.
