I bought like 25 from a hatchery hoping there would be a few decent quality birds. This one is the best so far.

However, they aren't supposed to be bearded, from this hatchery, and the beard isn't very full.

(There were a bunch with single combs and messed up toes and some just aren't very fluffy. I already sold most of them.)

Anyway, all he needs is a decent bird for his first year in 4-H. Tomorrow is a pre-fair show. The bird is only 2 months old so I guess he is allowed to do showmanship but not confirmation with it. I have no idea if it's a boy or girl so if you have any experience with sexing silkies let me know!

Do you think this will do?

If he enjoys all this I was planning to buy expensive birds from a breeder for next year.

They are looking for an animal that is well cared for. If your son takes good care of his bird, he will do well.

Kudos on getting him quality chicks. I wonder if you could get a good pullet and rooster this year and show them as parents with chicks nest year. Our kids never showed animals at 4-H so I'm not sure how they break up the show.

He did pretty well and the judge said that even though the bird isn't old enough for confirmation yet, it will do fine at the fair, no DQs. 👍
